Charles Mallandaine

Charles was born in Victoria on 20 May 1875 and baptised at the newly built Christ Church Cathedral on 11 July. The original church burned to the ground in 1869 and was replaced by a new wooden structure three years later. The current cathedral church located at Burdett and Quadra is the third church on the site and it was consecrated in 1929.

Charles grew up in the James Bay area of Victoria and spent much of his youth on the water of Victoria Harbour. He was a member of the James Bay Athletic Association and had a lifelong love of boating.

Charles never married and lived his entire adult life in the family home on Simcoe Street in Victoria. When his father died, he remained in the house and cared for his elderly mother and when she died in 1925, he remained there alone until his death. Charles worked in the printing office of the Province of BC from the time he left school until he retired in 1937. After his retirement, Charles bought an old Columbia River fishing boat and converted it into a motor launch. He enjoyed taking the boat out on the harbour and showing friends and visiting relatives the beauty of Vancouver Island.

Charles died of a heart attack on 12 November 1940 and was buried in the family plot at Ross Bay Cemetery. He did not leave a will and his brother and sister applied for probate. At the time of his death, Charles owned the house on Simcoe Street, his boat and land outside Victoria valued at $2500. His brother noted in the probate application that Charles was never in debt, always paid in cash and had an obsession about owing money.
