edith alice mallandain + abraham banham

Edith was born in Bethnal Green on 25 August 1888, the daughter of George Mallandain and Annie Devine. Her parents died within months of each other in late 1892 leaving four year old Edith and her two siblings as orphans. They were raised by their maternal grandparents, James Devine and Ann Pearson, in Bethnal Green but they moved out of the city to Walthamstow, Essex in the early 1900s.

Edith married Abraham Frederick Banham in Walthamstow on 19 April 1908 at St James the Evangelist in Walthamstow. Abraham was born in West Ham on 15 September 1884, the son of Moses Banham and Mary Ann Norwood, and baptised at St John the Evangelist on 4 October 1885. Shortly after their wedding, Edith and Abraham left West Ham and moved to Aston in Birmingham after Abraham got on job with the railway. Their first two children, Edith Mary and Clara Alice, were both born in Small Heath, Birmingham (in 1908 and 1910) and when Clara was baptised, the family was living at 10 Wolseley Street and Abraham was employed as a Railway Electrician.

One year later, the family was living at 16 Garrison Street in Birmingham and Abraham was working as an Arc Lamp Trimmer on the railway. Their third daughter, Annie Maud, was born in Birmingham on 14 April 1912 but shortly after her birth, Edith and Abraham returned to Walthamstow where their fourth daughter, Beatrice Olive was born on 5 June 1913 and baptised at St James on 22 June. After four daughters, they finally welcomed a son, Frederick George, on 12 December 1915.

They remained in Walthamstow and raised their family there. Daughter Edith was the first to leave home when she married William Keoghoe at St Mary the Virgin on 15 August 1931 and they had one daughter two years later. Annie Maud married John Dodd Colyer at St Mary on 9 October 1932 and they also had a daughter. Beatrice Olive married George Mills in 1936 and they had one son. One year later, Clara Alice married Aubrey Polton but it does not appear that they had any children. Frederick George was the last to marry, to Lily Emma Harrison, in 1939 and they too had one daughter.

Abraham Banham died in Southend on Sea, Essex in 1964. Edith returned to Walthamstow following Abraham’s death and she died there in 1987. She was predeceased by two of her children — Clara in 1979 and Fred in 1985. Their daughter Edith’s death record has not been found but Annie died in 1990 followed by Beatrice in 1997, both in Walthamstow.
