elizabeth ann mallendane + george albiston

Elizabeth was born on 3 April 1893 at 29 Gardeners Row in Bethnal Green, the daughter of John William Mallendane and his wife Emily Jane Brett. She married George Albiston at St Simon Zelots in Bethnal Green on 7 April 1912 with her parents as witnesses.

George was born on Cranbrook Street in Bethnal Green, the son of Samuel Henry Albiston and his wife Elizabeth Mary Ann Hall, and baptised at St Barnabas on 13 May 1892. George grew up, along with his six brothers and sisters, in the same neighbourhood in Bethnal Green as Elizabeth and her family. For many years, his father worked from home as a Tin Japaner making laquered tin plate but the family later opened a tobacconist and news agents shop on the Old Ford Road. When his father died in 1908, George took over the shop along with his mother and he was still working there when he married Elizabeth.

Elizabeth and George had three children: Lizzie born in 1912, George in 1914 and Alfred in 1917. But only two years after Alfred’s birth, George died in France aged only 27 years. Details of his military service have not been located but there is a possible match in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database for a G. Albiston of the Royal Irish Rifles who died on 24 March 1919 and was buried at the Lille Southern Cemetery. This matches the date of death listed in George’s probate record.

Elizabeth did not apply for probate of George’s estate, valued at £200, until 1933 and she may have been prompted to do so following the death of George’s mother. Elizabeth Mary Ann Albiston died at 330 Old Ford Road on 5 March 1933 and probate on her £873 estate was granted to Robert James Oatham, a tailor’s cutter, on 21 April.

alfred wastell

One year after George’s death, Elizabeth married Alfred Wastell at St James the Less on Christmas Day with her brother William and sister Rose actin as witnesses to the ceremony. Elizabeth may have been living with her sister Sarah and her new husband Harry Stone at the time as her address was listed as 8 Type Street on the marriage certificate — this was the same address given by Harry when he married Elizabeth’s sister eight months before. Her parents were living a few doors down at number 3 and six years later, her brother William was living at number 8.

Alfred Wastell was born on 16 March 1892 and baptised at St James the Great on 3 April. He was the son of Frederick Wastell, a bootmaker, and his wife Jane Burcombe and the family lived on Lessada Street in Bethnal Green for many years. At the time of his marriage, he was living on Type Street and working as a Sailor.

Alfred and Elizabeth had two daughters, Alice in 1925 and Renee in 1928, and both were born in Bethnal Green. The family later moved from Bethnal Green to Loughton near Epping Forest in Essex. Alfred died at 28 Newmans Lane in Loughton on 17 June 1956 and the administration of his estate, valued at £400, was granted to his brother Frederick, a lorry driver. Elizabeth died at St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping on 16 December and administration of her £1200 estate was also granted to Frederick Wastell.
