frank sydney mallandain + edith berube

Frank was the youngest son of Peter Mallandain and Jane Oddy. He was born on 8 June 1876 at 65 Leipsie Road in Camberwell and baptised at the Emmanuel Church in Southwark on 16 July. After finishing school, he worked as an Assistant to a Wholesale Stationer but four years later, he left his job and emigrated to Canada.

On 5 September 1895, Frank sailed from Liverpool to Montreal on board the Sardinian and travelling on the same ticket was A.S Riches. The Canadian passenger list does not contain much more information other than they were both adults and employed as labourers; it confirms that their intended destination was Quebec.

Frank initially settled in Tadoussac, a village set in a small bay on the St Lawrence near the mouth of the Saguenay River. The village was established in 1600 as one of the first trading posts in what was then the colony of New France. It was initially settled as a fur trading post but soon expanded as a major whaling port. In the 19th Century, forestry was an increasingly important industry and Tadoussac became popular as a vacation destination and whale hunting was soon replaced with whale watching.

Less than a year after arriving in Quebec, Frank converted to Catholicism and was baptised at Ste Croix in Tadoussac on 20 June 1896. He next appears in a 1904 passenger list when he returned to England for a visit; he sailed from Quebec City to Liverpool on board the Kensington arriving on 21 July and after a two month visit, he returned to Quebec on board the Vancouver. The Canadian passenger list records his occupation as Lumberman but no addresses were listed — either his home address or those he visited in England. By 1911, Frank had left Tadoussac and settled in the small town of Cabano in Temiscouata Township on the Gaspe peninsula. He appears in the 1911 Census in the parish of St Mathias de Cabano, living alone and working as a Photographer.

Frank married Edith Berube at St Matthias in Cabano on 15 July 1913. Edith was born in Quebec on 12 February 1888 to Cyprien Berube and Georgianna Breton. The Berube family, including all ten of their children, were living in the parish of St Louis de Ha! Ha! in Temiscouata.

Ernest Mallandain

Frank and Edith had three sons all born in Cabano. Joseph Maurice Sydney was baptised at St Mathias on 28 May 1914. He died at the children’s hospital in Montreal on 1 February 1927 and was buried at the parish cemetery in Cabano three days later. According to the Marshall report, Maurice died of meningitis but the cause of death has not been confirmed as Canadian privacy laws limit access to 20th century records. Edward Elliston was born on 6 November 1919 and baptised at St Mathias the next day. His baptismal record lists his name as Joseph Edward Elliston which seems odd considering his older brother was also named Joseph. Ernest was born in Rimouski in 1921 but his baptismal record has not been found.

The available records are quite limited and nothing further is known about Frank and Edith. Their son Edward married Fernande Dumont and they had five children. Edward worked as an accountant for many years and died in Quebec City on 20 December 2002 followed by his wife, Fernande, on 29 May 2008.

Ernest worked as a civil servant and married Gemma Beaulieu and they too had five children. He died on 27 December 2004 in Rimouski.
