Hannah, or Annie as she was known, was born on 22 December 1864 at the City of London Lying in Hospital on Old Street in St Luke. She was the youngest daughter of John William Mallandain and his wife Ann Callaghan. When her mother registered her birth on 9 January 1865, she listed the family’s address as 1 Bonney’s Lane in Bethnal Green. Annie was not living with her family in 1871 but she had returned by 1881 and worked in a mill as a Trimmer to help support her family.
When she was 24 years old, Annie married Albert Warren on 27 July 1890 at St Jude in Bethnal Green. Albert was born in Mile End on 23 July 1866 to James Warren and Emily Barker. When they married, Albert was working as a Carman and living at 25 St Jude Street while Annie lived down the street at number 10.
Following their marriage, they moved to 1 Wennington Road near Victoria Park in Bethnal Green and rented rooms next door to Albert’s parents. The first of their eight children, Annie Emily, was born at 1 Wennington Road on 10 December 1890 Annie and Albert had six more children over the next ten years. Albert was born on 16 July 1892 at 1 Wellington Road and baptised at St James the Great on 7 August. Louisa was born in 1894 and baptised on 19 January at St Barnabas in Bethnal Green. Elizabeth Ada was born on Nottisford Street in the spring of 1895 and baptised on 25 May at St Andrew, Bethnal Green. By the time their next daughter was born, they had moved just across the Regent’s Canal to 72 George Gardens — Mary Ann was born on 2 July 1897 and baptised at St Jude on 21 July followed by Caroline on 25 March 1899 and son James on 17 November 1900.
By 1901, they had moved down the street to 5 George Gardens and Albert was now working as a Bricklayer’s Labourer to support his growing family. Their eighth child, Grace, was born in 1903.
In 1911, they were living a few streets away from George Gardens at 82 Cranbrook Street in Bethnal Green. Albert was still employed as a Bricklayer’s Labourer although this census also notes his employer as the Borough Council. Their daughter Annie was living with her grandparents on Wennington Road but their other seven children were all still living at home, a total of nine people living in 5 rooms. Their eldest son was working for a Lithographic company and the two oldest daughters were also working to help support the family: Louisa was working as an Ostrich feather curler and her sister Ada as a machinist.
Annie had a history of heart problems and following a stroke, she died at Bethnal Green Hospital on 18 January 1938, aged 73 years. She was buried at Woodgrange Park Cemetery in Newham on 25 January. Annie and Albert were living at 5 Poulton Street, recently renamed from Providence Place in Russia Lane, at the time and Annie left her entire estate, valued at £125, to her husband.
In 1939, Albert was still living on Poulton Street along with two of his daughters Mary Ann and Caroline. Mary Ann married Harry Freedman in Bethnal Green in 1928 and they had one daughter but Harry died in the fall of 1937. Caroline had married Edward Cox in 1918 but her husband was likely serving in the military and was therefore not listed in the 1939 Register. Both Mary Anna nd Caroline were working as Tailor’s Under Pressers.
Albert died from the effects of a lung abscess at the Bethnal Green Hospital on 11 March 1941 and his daughter Caroline, who was still living with him, acted as the informant.
