Annie was born on 15 May 1867 in Shoreditch, the daughter of James Devine and Ann Pearson. She married George Mallandain on on 6 May 1884 at St Bartholomew, Bethnal Green and they had three children, James, Annie and Edith. Her husband died of cancer when he was only 29 years old and Annie died several weeks later but the cause of her death is unknown.
James Devine was born in Bethnal Green abt 1847 but neither his birth or baptism record has been found. Ann Frances Maria Pearson was born on 25 September 1835 and baptised at St Giles Cripplegate on 18 October, the daughter of William and Ann.
Ann was first married to Antothizah Howard at St John, Hoxton on 5 March 1855. They had one daughter, Clara Annie Elizabeth, born in Shoreditch on 23 August 1856. In 1861, Ann was living with her parents at 2 East Street in Shoreditch but Antothizah was not with them nor has he been found elsewhere although Ann was listed as married so it would appear that Antothizah was still alive. Clara was not baptised until 1868, at St John the Baptist in Hoxton, and her parents were listed as Anthony and Ann Howard.
However, by this time, Ann had already had her first daughter, Anne Louisa, with James Devine. Anne Louisa was born on 15 May and baptised on 9 June 1867 at St Matthias in Bethnal Green. No death record has been found for Antothizah or Anthony Howard nor a marriage record for Ann and James so the exact circumstances of their relationship remain unknown.
In 1871, James and Ann were living on Eli Street in Shoreditch with daugther Anne, son Henry and eight year old William Flowers who was listed as James’ son-in-law but this relationship is not possible given William’s age so it is possible that he was Ann’s son from a previous relationship. Sadly their son, Henry, died only months after the census was taken. Ann and James had two more daughters — Rosina Florence was baptised at St Thomas, Bethnal Green on 13 October 1872 but sadly died before her second birthday and their third daughter, Edith, was born about 1876 but her birth record has not been located. Ann’s daughter, Clara Howard, was living with her maternal grandparents who had moved to Stroud in Gloucestershire and she was working as a Wharper.
In 1881, James and Ann were living at 21 Hassard Street in Bethnal Green and their surviving daughters, Anne and Edith, were both attending school. Ann’s daughter, Clara Howard, had returned to live with her and was employed as a silk winder. William Flowers was also still living with the family and his relationship in this census is listed as step-son but unfortunately, no birth or baptismal records have been found to confirm his relationship. Ann’s elderly parents, William and Ann Pearson, had returned from Stroud and were also living with the family.
Ten years later, they were still on Hassard Street but only their daughters remained at home along with Anne Louisa’s two young children. One year later, Anne Louisa died following the birth of her third child and her children were taken in by her parents and by 1901, they were all living at 34 Ravenscroft Buildings in Bethnal Green. Edith Devine married William Henry Brown in Islington on 22 July 1896 and they moved to Wathamstow in Essex and had two daughters, Edith and Alice.
Ann Frances Maria Pearson died in Poplar in late 1910 and following her death, James moved to Walthamstow to live with his daughter Edith and remained there until his death in 1923. In 1911, Clara Howard was living at 37 Campbell Road in Walthamstow near her step father and step sister, Edith and her family. Clara was sharing one room with her niece, Annie Mallandain, and was working as a Cotton Spinner. Clara obviously had a close relationship with Annie and her brother James as she followed them when they emigrated to Canada; she arrived in Quebec on 20 June 1920 and took the train across the country to Vancouver and when Annie moved to California, Clara followed and she died there, aged 92 years, on 14 January 1951.
