mary ann ferrey

Mary Ann was born in Bethnal Green on 11 May 1800 and baptised at St Matthew on 22 June. She was the youngest child born to Isaac Ferrey and his wife Susanna Bulinger. Her father and both her grandfathers were weavers and Mary Ann ended up marrying a weaver who also came from a long line of silk weavers.

She married William Malandain on 22 August 1822 at St George in the East and they had six children but only three survived infancy. The family lived in the parish of St Matthew for many years. Mary Ann died at the family home on Conduit Street on 19 August 1847 from an infection that led to gangrene in her foot.

Three years after Mary’s death, William married her neice, Louisa Hannah Ferrey, at St Philip in Stepney.

Isaac and Susanna were married by banns on 12 December 1785 at St Dunstan in Stepney. He was born on 22 October 1760, to John Ferrey and his wife Susanna, and baptised at St Dunstan on 2 November. Susanna was the daughter of John Bulinger and Elizabeth Royes and she was also baptised at St Dunstan on 15 April 1764.

Isaac worked as a weaver as did his father and he and Susanna were living in George Yard when they had their first son, Isaac, one year after their wedding. He was baptised at St Mary in Whitechapel on 10 December. Daughter Elizabeth was born on 11 September 1788 and baptised at St Matthew, Bethnal Green on 3 October and second son, Samuel, was born on 8 October 1790 and baptised at St Matthew on 21 November. Mary Ann was born on 11 May 1800 and baptised at St Matthew on 22 June.

Son Isaac followed his father into the weaving trade and when he was nineteen, he married Ann Barlow on 15 December 1805 at St John in Hackney. They were living on Quaker Street in Spitalfields when their son Isaac Samuel was born and he was baptised at nearby Christ Church on 25 January 1808. By the time their daughter Ann Maria was born on 31 January 1812, they had moved to George Street in Shoreditch and they had their daughter baptised at the local parish church dedicated to St Leonard.

Isaac Ferrey died in July 1829 and was buried at the Gibraltar Row Burial Ground on 12 July. His wife, Susanna Bulinger, died in 1832 and she too was buried at Gibraltar Row on 13 May.

Like his father and grandfather, Samuel was also working as a Weaver. He married Hannah Walker on 24 October 1813 at St Mary at Hill in Eastcheap and they settled first on Montague Street in Whitechapel where their first son Samuel George, known as George, was born on 22 September 1814; he was baptised at St Mary in Whitechapel the following January. Louisa Hannah was baptised at Christ Church in Spitalfields on 12 April 1818 and Henry Daniel on 16 July 1820. They were still on Montague Street when daughter Susan was baptised on 19 October 1823 but there is no record of Susan beyond her baptism so it is likely she died in infancy. Edward, known as Edwin, was born on 15 April and James Isaac on 30 March 1829. He was not baptised until 28 June 1837, at St Matthew in Bethnal Green, and by then, the family had moved from Montague Street to James Street.

In 1841, Samuel and Hannah were still living on James Street along with six of their seven children and Samuel and his four eldest children were all working as Weavers. Henry was the first to leave home when he married Mary Ann Temple at St Philip’s on 20 November 1843 and his sister Mary Ann appeared as one of the witnesses. Henry and Mary Ann had six children and the family lived on East Street in Bethnal Green for many years.

By the time Henry married, Samuel was no longer working as a Weaver but he found a job as a Fellowship Porter. The change may have been due to the declining fortunes of the weaving industry in the East End of London and also partly due to his health. Samuel died at the family home at 8 James Street on 9 March 1847, aged 57 years.

Their eldest son George married Mary Ann Lane at St Philip’s in Bethnal Green on 2 June 1849. George worked as a Weaver for most of his life and he and Mary Ann had nine children. Louisa Hannah married William Malandain at St Philip’s on 14 July 1850 and they had two children. William was well known to the family as he had been married to Samuel's sister, Mary Ann, for 25 years until her death in 1847. William died only four years after he married Louisa and she raised their two children on her own.

Youngest son James Isaac married Ann Fraley on 9 March 1851 at St Jude in Bethnal Green. He was living at 8 New Church Street with his family at the time and working as a Grocer. Ann lived at 5 Green Street and worked as a Weaver along with her father, Samuel. They had seven children and lived in Bethnal Green and later Hackney.

In 1851 Hannah, her daughter Mary Ann and son Edwin were living at New Church Street and both women were working as Silk Weavers while Edwin worked as a labourer. Ten years later, Hannah and Mary Ann were living at 17 Conduit Street in the same house as her daughter Louisa and her two children. Mary Ann worked as a Silk Warper and when her mother died in 1864, she moved in with sister Louisa and when she died in 1886, Mary Ann remained on Conduit Street, later renamed Viaduct Street, with her niece Louisa Mary Malandain. Mary Ann died in Bethnal Green in 1905.
