There is no record of Marie’s birth or her parents’ names however there are several associated records in both France and England that suggest some family connections.
Jean Houteville and Marie Maillard had a daughter Ester who was born in France in 1664. Ester married Louis Igou, a labourer, on 8 February 1682 in Criquetot L’Esneval, Normandy. Louis was born in 1661 to Louis Igou and Anne Pouchet who were married in the protestant temple in Lintot on 8 February 1654. Anne Pouchet was born in nearby Bolbec.
Ester Houteville and Louis Igou later fled to London where their daughter Anne was born; she was baptised at the Threadneedle Street French Huguenot Church on 8 June 1688 with Pierre Igou and Anne Houterville acting as godparents.
Six years later, Pierre and Anne married at Threadneedle Street and the record confirms that Anne was also the daughter of Jean Houteville and Marie Maillard, who were both now deceased. The family ties were even closer as Pierre, a native of Bolbec, was Louis Igou’s brother. The record contains an additional reference that Anne was a native of Grinville which may refer to the village of Grainville-Ymauville near Goderville.
Anne Houteville gave birth to a daughter, Ester, who was baptised at Threadneedle Street on 28 February 1702. The baptismal record notes that Pierre Igou was employed as a hat maker and the family lived on White’s Row in Spitalfields. Pierre Mallandain and Ester Igou stood as Ester’s godparents. Three years later, Ester Igou acted as godparent at the baptism of Pierre and Marie’s daughter Marie.
Based on these records, it is very likely that Marie Houteville was also the daughter of Jean Houteville and Marie Maillard and was born near Goderville, south of Fecamp, about 1670.
