William was born in Littleborough, Lancashire in late 1858 and baptised on 1 January 1859 at the local church, Holy Trinity. He was the eldest son of John Mallandain and Elizabeth Sibbald. After a temporary move to Devon, his family settled in Saddleworth where William and his siblings grew up and lived for the rest of their lives.
William married Harriet Massey at St Chad in the hamlet of Uppermill in 1888. Harriet was born in Hodnel, Shropshire in 1865, the daughter of William Massey, a Farmer, and his wife Harriet Ellis.
In 1891, William and Harriet Mallandain lived on Shawhall Bank Road in Saddleworth and William was employed as a Commercial Clerk. Their first child, Dorothy, was born in Saddleworth and baptised at Christ Church in Friezland on 17 August 1891. According to her baptismal record, the family was living at 1 Oakfield in Greenfield at the time.
Son John William was born in Saddleworth on 3 August 1894 and baptised on 26 September at Christ Church. The baptismal record notes that the family was still living at Oakfield but by 1901, they were again recorded living on Shawhall Bank Road. John was employed as a Cashier in a Woollen, Cotton and Linen Mill and the family was sufficiently well off to employ a domestic servant, 19 year old Elizabeth Powles. Their third child, Eileen Marjorie, was born on 3 September 1902 and baptised one month later at Christ Church. The family’s address was listed as Bank Side and William’s occupation was Woollen Manufacturer.
Sadly, their daughter Dorothy died in 1908 aged only 16 years. She was buried at Christ Church on 23 May but the cause of death was not listed on the burial record.
William appears in Slater’s Manchester, Salford & Suburban Directory in 1909 — he is listed in the Exchanges Directory at Royal George Mills in Greenfield. The family next appears in the records in the 1911 census when they were enumerated at Shawhall Bank Road. The census notes the size of the house occupied by the family as six rooms and confirms that they had three children of whom two survived. They employed 16 year old Jessie Wood as a domestic servant; Jessie was born in Ellermere, Shropshire and may have to come to work for them through Harriet’s family connection.
In 1911, their son John William was working as an Apprentice General Engineer and later served in the Royal Navy Reserve from 1918 to 1919. He married Agnes Mary Burgess at Christ Church in 1930. Agnes was born in Saddleworth on 24 April 1908, the daughter of George Burgess, a Commercial Traveller, and his wife Agnes Whitehead. John and Agnes were living at 68 Chew Valley Road in Saddleworth when the 1939 Register was compiled and he was working as a Master Engineer.
Harriet Massey died on 25 October 1932, aged 67 years, at 35 Palatine Road in Whithington, Lancashire and was buried at Christ Church on 28 October. The probate lists her home as The Ridge, Sharon in Greenfield and her estate valued at £259 was proved in London one month later to her husband, a retired Director.
Eileen married John Lewis Bradbury at Christ Church, Friezland in 1934. John was born in Saddleworth on 18 April 1900, the only son of Buckley Bradbury and Ann Bentley. His father, a Woollen Loom Tuner, was also born in Saddleworth and his mother in nearby Marsden. They left Saddleworth and settled in Chester where John Lewis worked as a Teacher in a Teacher Training College.
In 1939, William was living at 104 Mossley Road along with his housekeeper Agnes Hunt and his youngest sister, Margaret, was living next door at 106. William Sibbald Mallandain died on 12 May 1945 at his home in Greenfield and probate on his £15 000 estate was granted to his two children. His son John William died at Gretabank in Ash Mill near South Molton, Devon on 3 June 1977 and his wife, Agnes, died in Oldham in 1981. Daughter Eileen Marjorie died in Chester in 1993; her husband John Lewis Bradbury pre-deceased her in 1981.
