Charles was born on 8 September 1891, the son of Charles Mallandaine and Elizabeth Le Page. He was actually born in Gravesend, Kent but his birth place was officially registered as Fort George, Guernsey. Charles was born just before his mother was due to travel to Guernsey to join her husband and they did not have time to register his birth before they left.
Charles enlisted in the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry on 16 November 1916 and fought in France in WWI; he was described as 5’11’ tall and 136lbs on his army Attestation Papers and his address was given as 1 Stanley Villas on Stanley Road, Guernsey. He was injured on duty on 11 April 1918 and suffered gun shot wounds to both thighs. Following the war, he returned to Guernsey and continued to work as a Cabinet Maker but his injuries continued to cause him difficulties for many years and although he applied for a military disability pension, it was declined.
He married Eunice Ada Giles on 18 April 1928. Eunice was born in Guernsey in 1899, the daughter of James Giles and Alice Tucker.
Charles and Eunice had two sons, Graham Charles was born on 12 April 1929 and Derek was born on 1 September 1932. Graham married Dorothy May Goddard and had two daughters; he ran an electrical company on the island for many years.
Derek married Roselle Elizabeth Martell and had two sons. Derek and Roselle divorced in 1981 and he remarried on 15 September 1981 to Peggy June Hacquoil.
Eunice Giles died in Guernsey in 1971 followed by her husband Charles Harold on 26 December 1983. Their eldest son, Graham, died at St Michel du Valle on 13 March 2003 and his wife ten years later at Summerland House Nursing Home. Derek died at King Edward VII Hospital in Castel, Guernsey on 8 September 2011.
