eunice giles

Eunice

Eunice Ada Giles was born in Guernsey in 1899, the daughter of James Creber Giles and Alice Tucker. Her birth record has not been found but her age is listed fairly consistently in census returns and other records. The Giles line has been traced back to Eunice’s great-grandparents, Robert and Elizabeth.

robert giles + elizabeth creber

According to census records, Robert was born in Walkhampton, Devon about 1771. He married Elizabeth Creber who was born in the same village one year later to James and Margaret Creber. Records have been found for two children: James Creber was baptised on 8 November 1805 in Walkhampton and Emma was born about 1813. Robert, Elizabeth and their daughter Emma were living in Compton Village in 1841 and working as servants on a local farm. Elizabeth died later that year, aged 69 years, and was buried in the church yard in nearby Marldon on 4 December. Follwowing his wife’s death, Robert moved in with his son James until his death in 1858. He was also buried in Marldon on 28 January 1858.

james creber giles + ann adams

James married Ann Adams on 19 June 1828 in Marldon but they had already had on daughter before their marriage. Sarah was born 1827 followed by John Atwill two years later and Elizabeth in 1831. Robert was born in 1833, Emma Creber on 12 April 1836 and William Adams in 1838. Richard Theophilus was born in Marldon on 16 April 1840 and baptised on 5 May. In 1841, the family of nine was living in Compton Village north of Marldon and James was working as a carpenter to support his family. Their youngest child, Mary Ann, was born in 1843.

In 1851, the family was still living in Compton Village and James’ occupation was listed as Master Carpenter and he employed one apprentice. Also living in the household was his father Robert and a lodger, 92 year old Susan Chanter who was a listed as a widow and a pauper. Their elder daughters were working as a dress maker and a servant while the two oldest boys were working as a farm labourer and a carpenter but the younger children were still attending school.

Ten years later, six of their children were still living at home in Compton. Eldest son John was employed as a shepherd but Robert, William and Richard worked as carpenters along with their father. Daughters Sarah and Elizabeth had left home but Emma helped her mother in the home and Mary Ann worked as a farm labourer. Only Robert and Emma remained at home in 1871 and eight years later, Ann Adams died and was buried in Marldon. By 1891, James had retired and moved to a house in Love Lane in the neighbouring village of Marldon along with his daughter Emma. His son Robert died later that year in Compton and was buried in Marldon on 15 October.

James died in 1892 and was buried in Marldon on 12 February and his youngest daughter Mary Ann died in 1928.

richard theophilus giles + emma smale

Richard married Emma Smale in 1868 and three years later, they appear in the census at Compton where Richard was employed as a Miller. Their first child, Emma, was only one year old and shortly after the census they had a second child, James, followed several years later by another son, Frederick, born in 1875.

Some time between 1875 and 1878, the family moved to the island of Guernsey and settled in St Sampson where their daughter, Ethel, was born shortly after. They appear in the 1881 Census on Nock Road where Richard was employed as a Carter and ten years later, the family was living at South Quay and Richard had changed occupations again and was working as a Gardener.

james giles + alice tucker

James was still living with his parents in 1891 but likely married soon after to Alice Tucker. In 1901, James and Alice lived at 1 Hazeldene Terrace, Vale Road in St Sampson along with their three children — Kenneth born in 1890, Irene born in 1898 and Eunice Ada born in 1899 — and James was employed as a Carpenter.

In 1911, the family was living on Grand Maison Road in St Sampson and James was working as a Foreman Carpenter. They had two more children, Bernard born in 1903 and Phyllis in 1905. Their son Kenneth was listed in the census but his birth date is recorded as 1900; this could be an error or perhaps their first son died and they named their second son Kenneth as well. Alice’s elderly parents, William and Julia Tucker, were also living with the family.

James Creber Giles died in Guernsey on 18 October 1945 and Alice Tucker on 27 January 1950.
